Money Must Be Made
Fondazione MAST promotes the '5th Photography Biennial of Industry and Labour' and invites 10 international artists to exhibit in 10 spaces in the City of Bologna.
Always interested in the encounter between different cultures, Lorenzo Vitturi developed the project Money Must Be Made during a residency in Lagos at the invitation of the African Artists Foundation. The setting for the research was Balogun, one of the largest street markets in the world, where Vitturi took photographs and interviewed locals. The artist also collected a number of materials - some of them paradoxically produced in Asia - which, once in the studio, were treated with paints and pigments in bright, vivid colours typical of African culture. Assembling these altered materials, Vitturi created his sculptures, which he then photographed and printed. The result is an exhibition that investigates an authentic, fragile and boundless ecosystem, where tradition confronts the global economy, whose individuals, often depicted as strong and elegant equilibrists, are still a key factor.
