Sonia Kacem’s litography follows her ongoing research on the relationships between color, form and representation. The patterns of the works on paper are inspired by Kacem’s “color books,” which she has been working on since her residency in Egypt in 2019. The books are composed of natural forms and free geometric shapes and are a reaction to Kacem’s surroundings deriving from ornamentation in architecture. It is a study of color schemes, patterns, calligraphy, and the ornamental. The question of how to translate the forms and colors in their richness (that cannot be reproduced by offset-printing) into a new body of work, led the artist to lithography. Lithography proved to be a perfect tool for Kacem’s creative process, as it allows her to layer different patterns and colors on top of each other and experiment with various sequences. The result is a series of small edition lithographs, each worked on by several printing combinations, making them almost unique.
