Also on View: Yongqi Tang
In continuity with ‘Eros/Thanatos’ in Naples at 'Le Scalze', T293 Gallery is proud to present ‘Also on View: Yongqi Tang’, an intimate show that offers a unique vision of the artistic process of Yongqi Tang until June 7, 2024. This exhibition unveils the preparatory charcoal drawings on paper that precede those exhibited in Naples, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the foundational elements of her work.
The artist expresses: ‘Since I do large drawings for every painting I make as part of my process, I was interested in showing them at the gallery space along with the show in Naples. That would share more insights about my practice.’
Yongqi Tang's meticulous approach begins with large-scale charcoal drawings, which serve as both a technical rehearsal and a conceptual exploration for the final paintings. The charcoal medium, known for its depth, texture, and ability to capture nuanced details, plays a crucial role in her creative process. These preparatory sketches are not merely preliminary, they are integral works of art that stand on their own, showcasing the raw and unfiltered vision of the artist.
By presenting them, Tang invites viewers to engage more deeply with her art, providing a comprehensive understanding of her practice and the intricate journey from initial sketch to completed artwork.
The ‘Also on View’ highlights the elegance and versatility of charcoal as a medium. It allows for a dynamic range of expression, from delicate, light strokes to bold, dramatic lines, creating a vivid sense of movement and emotion. Tang's drawings reveal the underlying structures and themes that inform the paintings, offering an intimate look at the evolution of her artistic ideas.
The exhibition can be visited from May 22 to June 7, from Monday to Saturday from 12 to 7 pm.
